We are looking for a Converter Control Software Engineer who wishes to work in the field of power converter control, to develop new control systems for the next generation of large multi megawatt wind turbines. Located in our Keele office, the successful candidates will find themselves working with experienced engineers to specify, implement, test and configure power converter control systems for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy wind turbines.
This role will allow the successful candidates to participate with many aspects of the development of new control systems. With the converter being the interface between the turbine rotor and the grid, we work in a broad engineering discipline. We do not expect any applicant to have all the knowledge listed below. The willingness and ability to learn new engineering concepts, and the determination for solving complex engineering problem are the most important skills required.
Note : We work a hybrid week with typical 3 days in the office and 2 days from home
Some of your key tasks will include but not be limited to:
1. Develop new control software features and make changes to existing control software features, being involved in some or all these development steps, depending on the task: initial ideas, requirements capture, simulations/studies needed for design, development of design, identification of risks, implementation of control model/code, unit/component testing, system simulations/testing, developer and user documentation, software release testing, test rig testing/support or site testing/support
2. Proposing, simulating and testing new configurations/tunings for existing converter control features, eg for a new turbine configuration
3. Investigating issues reported from turbines or test rigs, to diagnose the cause of the issue
4. Development of simulation and test environments for testing converter control behavior
5. Interact with internal stakeholders such as engineers from a wide range of disciplines, project managers, etc
6. Plans, coordinates, and tracks activities in their area of technical responsibility
What you need to make a difference
Passion for renewable energy and a sense for the importance to lead the change. We are also looking for…
7. Experience implementing control software for simulation and/or real time operation
8. Knowledge of 3 phase, 2 level, power electronic drives & Pulse Width Modulation would be an advantage
9. Knowledge of permanent magnet generator/motor vector control would be an advantage
10. Knowledge of grid vector control and grid fault ride through would be an advantage
11. Experience with C, or C++, or other similar programing experience, would be an advantage
12. Time domain modelling experience on platforms such as MATLAB Simulink would be an advantage
13. Knowledge of unit testing and test driven development would be an advantage
14. Engineering degree which includes a significant proportion of electrical/electronic/software engineering
15. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate technically complicated topics concisely
16. Self-motivated with the ability to take the initiative in solving technical issues
17. Must be willing to undertake occasional domestic and international travel
