Position Description
Position Summary: Messiah University is looking for an experienced educator to support the Director of the Certificate Program for Students with Intellectual Disabilities. This two-year residential certificate program is newly developed and offers valuable educational experiences for students with intellectual disabilities. This program expects to host its first student cohort starting Fall 2025.
Education Required: Master’s Degree required, preferably in Special Education or Education.
Experience Required: 2-3 years of experience working in educational settings directly with students with intellectual disabilities.
Skills, Characteristics Required for Position: The University seeks an individual who has a strong understanding of educational practices and strategies for supporting students with intellectual disabilities, preferably transition aged youth. The assistant director should have excellent leadership, written and oral communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with diverse teams and stakeholders. The successful applicant will demonstrate strong organizational skills, problem solving skills, and cultural competence. They should also have a strong background in technology, including Microsoft and Canvas.
Primary Duties
* Assist in planning, developing, and implementing educational activities for students with intellectual disabilities.
* Teach courses in the program related to employment, independence, and personal development.
* Assist with the application, interview, and selection process for prospective students.
* Give oversight to curricular and co-curricular programming, and academic advising.
* Provide ongoing mentorship and support to staff, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.
* Collaborate with families and guardians to address student progress and retention.
* Maintain accurate records and conduct assessment related to student progress, program activities, and staff performance.
* Develop and maintain partnerships with local organizations, schools, agencies, and employers to enhance program resources and opportunities.
* Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
Secondary Duties
* Assist with conducting performance evaluations for peer mentors and offer constructive feedback to enhance staff performance and growth.
* Support the recruitment, training, and development of program staff, including faculty, peer mentors, and other support personnel.
* Assist with promoting the program within the community to build awareness and support.
* Ongoing professional development in relevant fields.
* Participate in campus governance and professional development opportunities as a member of the University Community of Educators.
* Other duties as assigned.
