Job summary
The purpose of the role is to provide comprehensive secretarial support to the general surgery department and associated team.
The post holder will work independently to provide a secretarial and administrative office function to the consultant and associated team responsible for general surgery. Duties will include transcribing medical correspondence and multi-disciplinary meeting notes, audio typing, undertaking mail and filing duties, liaising with a number of departments to co-ordinate the patient's pathway and retrieving patient's medical notes.
They will provide the relevant information to the waiting list co-ordinator and directorate management team as and when required, dealing with patients, relatives, carers and external partners on a regular day to day basis using tact and diplomacy.
Main duties of the job
The principal accountabilities of this post are:
1. Plan own day to day tasks and duties.
2. Undertake routine typing and audio typing of clinical correspondence.
3. Manage consultant diaries.
4. Prioritise results, organise clinical activity and patient admissions.
5. Liaise with patients, General Practitioners and other Health Boards/Trusts to arrange ongoing treatment and care.

9. Knowledge of a full range of administrative services acquired through training and experience to Vocational Level 3 or equivalent skills, knowledge and work experience. Knowledge of health board IT systems, policies and procedures.
