Job overview
Brentwood Preparatory School is a large, academically selective IAPS school with outstanding facilities, small class sizes and a happy and supportive staff team. It is part of Brentwood School, a 3-18 HMC school of over 1900 pupils, just 20 minutes from London Liverpool Street.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic, driven and innovative individual to join this high-performing and superbly resourced Preparatory School. We are the largest tied house Prep School in the country and we pride ourselves on knowing and delivering an outstanding all-round education to every child.
We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified individual to join our teaching staff as a Class Teacher in Key Stage Two for one year. The school is currently transitioning to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (The PYP) and, for that reason, we are keen to appoint someone with an enthusiasm for learning new teaching practices and curriculum design.
The role of Class Teacher involves teaching English and Maths as well as other subjects as directed by the Deputy Head (Academic). The ability to teach Computer Science is desirable but not essential. At the heart of the Class Teacher role is delivering excellent pastoral care for the pupils and taking the time to know each pupil as an individual.
All of our teaching staff are versatile in terms of which subjects they teach and are prepared to undertake the planning and delivery for a range of different subjects if required. All teachers actively contribute to our Co-Curricular programme and our Pastoral work.
Brentwood School has its own pay scale that is significantly above the maintained sector and we also have a range of subsidised staff accommodation that may be available for the successful applicant should they need to relocate.
Brentwood School ethos
We embody our values of virtue, learning and manners just as those before us have been doing since 1557. We are proud of our modern inclusive community which is shaped by our Christian Foundation. Our pupils are confident without being arrogant, they look out for each other, they do the right thing, even when no-one is looking and they respect difference: you will see a footballer enjoying lunch with a chorister and a dance captain running a recycling project with a young chess enthusiast.
We help our pupils to solve problems. In partnership with parents, we teach them to persevere after setbacks, adopt a growth mindset, and challenge the norm. We encourage them to ask questions in class and take control of their own learning. Of course, they work hard and enjoy great success in and out of the classroom, and once they’ve left us, many go on to use and develop their leadership skills and achieve beyond their expectations, always remembering what Brentwood has taught them.
That’s who we are. We are Brentwood.
Staff across both the Prep and Senior School enjoy a bespoke collaborative approach to professional development. We believe in being a research engaged school, with those that facilitate our in-house research programme being trained by the Institute of Education. We support many of our staff in obtaining external accreditation across a range of fields and are engaged with a number of national and international organisations. We are a highly supportive school that values the contributions made by a motivated and intellectually curious staff. There are a range of ways that we enhance our staff experience; free gym membership, benefits hub, free lunch, free tickets to school concerts and performance to name but a few.
Brentwood School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

First established in 1557, Brentwood School is one of the UK’s leading independent schools for boys and girls aged 3 to 18. Set within a 75-acre site, in the heart of Brentwood town, and a direct train ride from London Stratford station, Brentwood's campus provides a stimulating environment for innovative teaching and a first-class education.
The facilities at Brentwood School are of the highest quality across all areas - academic, arts and sport. Brentwood has around 1900 students, making it larger than the average school of its type, and just over 1200 of these students are in the Senior School, which includes approximately 70 boarding pupils.
Brentwood's history spans almost 500 years and its School motto, ‘Virtue, Learning and Manners’, is taken from the School statutes of 1622. The principles of academic achievement within a caring Christian ethos remain a cornerstone of the School’s philosophy today.
Brentwood School is an excellent place to work and extremely well-located. Picturesque grounds and state of the art facilities make for a wonderful and inspiring learning and working environment. The campus is in the centre of Brentwood and a walk away from all the cultural, retail, gastronomic and nightlife facilities it has to offer. It is a mere 40 minutes to London from Brentwood Rail Station and 20 minutes from Shenfield Station, and with the recent opening of the Elizabeth Line, passengers are able to reach Central & West London without having to change.

Values and Vision
Although nominally a co-educational school, Brentwood School operates the diamond structure. This essentially means that pupils are taught in a co-educational setting only up to Senior School, before being split into single-sex groups. In the Sixth Form, the classes are co-educational once again, this is intended to ensure that students get the best of both single-sex and co-educational schooling. Admission into Brentwood School is selective, either by formal or informal assessment depending on year group. The school maintains high academic standards for its students, with a high-quality curriculum built around a strong set of core subjects, and supported by a huge range of co-curricular and sporting activities.
