Assistant Building Inspector (RBI) Birmingham

We have a significant number of RBI surveyors and through supervision, we can help you extend your knowledge and experience, helping with your long-term development.
The Assistant Building Inspector supports the Building Control team in ensuring that building projects comply with building codes, regulations and safety standards. This role involves assisting with site inspections, evaluating construction work and helping to ensure that all structures meet statutory requirements for safety, accessibility and sustainability.
This is an entry-level role, suitable for someone with foundational knowledge in construction or building regulations who is looking to grow within the field of Building Control.
The tasks you will undertake will include (but are not limited to):
1. Assist with inspection – conduct site inspections under the supervision of a Building Inspector to assess the quality, safety and compliance of construction work. Ensure building projects adhere to approved plans and regulatory standards.
2. Regulatory compliance – help verify that construction projects meet local, national and international building codes, planning laws and environmental regulations. Stay up to date on changes to building codes and legislation.
3. Documentation and reporting – prepare inspection reports and maintain accurate records of site visits, ensuring all documentation is clear, concise and compliant with organisational standards. Assist in issuing compliance notices and other regulatory documents as needed.
4. Technical support – provide technical guidance to construction teams, contractors and clients regarding building regulations and requirements.
5. Quality assurance – help in the identification of potential safety or compliance issues.
6. Professional development – engage in ongoing training and professional development opportunities to deepen knowledge of building regulations, inspection techniques and industry standards.
7. Health & safety compliance – follow and promote safety guidelines during site visits, helping to foster a safe working environment.
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
1. Membership of RICS, CABE or equivalent (or qualified by suitable experience), ensuring CPD requirements are met thereafter to broaden and develop skills.
2. Ideally demonstrating compliance through registering as an RBI (all levels will be considered).
3. Prior experience in construction, building inspection or related role.
4. Familiarity with building regulations and construction standards.
5. Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
6. Ability to build relationships with clients and deliver excellent client care.
7. A self-starting attitude and an ability to work independently as well as part of a large project team.
8. Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, development of suitable solutions and the implementation of these solutions.
