Main duties of the job
Duties and responsibilities include:
Opening up/locking-up of Practice premises and maintaining security in accordance with Practice protocols.
Maintaining and monitoring the Practice appointments system
Processing personal and telephone requests for appointments, visits and telephone consultations and ensuring callers are directed to the appropriate healthcare professional.
Processing and distributing incoming (and outgoing) mail.
Taking messages and passing on information.
Handling general enquiries, explaining surgery procedures.
Dealing with actions requested by the GPs/Nurses from incoming post/results.
Processing repeat prescriptions in accordance with Practice guidelines
Computer data entry/data allocation and collation; processing and recording information in accordance with Practice procedures.
Initiating contact with and responding to requests from patients, other team member and associated healthcare agencies and providers.
Keeping the reception area, noticeboards, and leaflet dispensers tidy and free from obstructions and clutter.
Providing cover for members of the Reception/Administrative Team during periods of sickness and annual leave.
Attending Meetings/training as necessary.
Handling and recording payment for private services.

We are a practice based in Shrewsbury Shropshire. The practice has a list size of approximately 10,900 patients. We are a training practice with 6 GP Partners, 2 Salaried GP, 2 Practice Nurses, 4 HCA's, 1 ACP & 1 PA. We are a part of the Shrewsbury Primary Care Network and work in partnership with 11 other Shrewsbury practices. The non clinical team consists of a Practice Manager, an Assistant Manager, a Reception Supervisor, Secretarial Manager, Receptionists, Data Administrators & Secretaries. We are a very supportive and friendly team with people who are moving on for retirement.
Job responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities ofthe medical receptionist. There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry outother tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffinglevels. Receiving incoming calls and contactingpatients by telephone, text, email orletter
To arrange appointments for patients via our computerisedappointments system
Support the clinical team with tasks
Shredding, filing & photocopying
Emails and AccuRx
Support with QOF
Taking and relaying messages over the telephone and face-to-face
Deal with visit requests & provide the necessary paperwork fordoctors
Receiving patients and visitors at the reception desk andconsulting with other members of the team
Deal with requests for prescriptions, reports, etc, and checkingpatient identifiable information, all in line with Practice protocols
Processing prescriptions and amending patient details
Dealing with new patients documentation & temporary residentsand entering details onto the system and creating new patient files
Process patients change of address computer data & medicalrecords (have knowledge of practice area)
Registration of patient on line access
Communication with patients on behalf of clinicians with testresults and messages
Have a working knowledge of our telephone system, during &after hours
Be available to provide cover if requested be flexible i.e.support with overtime requirements/ adjust shift pattern to supportservice delivery
