The Senior Research Engineer (SRE) role is focused on the technical delivery of projects and supporting the development of project related activities across The MTC, working across various technology departments and industrial sectors.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Role modelling best practices to MTC colleagues, industrial members and customers – technical, commercial and interpersonal. This will include providing technical mentoring and guidance to support colleagues’ professional development.
2. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to successfully achieve technical deliverables on large projects – this will include involvement with concept generation, detailed design, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning and an awareness of project budget and deliverables.
3. Act as Technical Lead for projects where required; ensuring work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales.
4. Undertaking innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+.
5. Contributing to the identification, technical specification and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial member’s premises.
Person Specification
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
1. Degree, or equivalent experience in mechanical design engineering or related discipline.
2. The person shall require having strong interpersonal, collaboration and organisational skills; MTC takes on challenges that are often ambiguous and/or technically challenging, and a mature approach to expectation setting will be a great benefit, in addition to being excellent at communicating to customers during project delivery.
3. Demonstrable industrial experience in the following areas:
1. Use of critical thinking, design thinking or other design methodologies and approaches to generate product design and development solutions.
2. Working in partnership with stakeholders to develop innovative design solutions to complex problems.
3. NPD (new product development) and NPI (new product introduction).
4. Technical project management such as appropriate resourcing, balancing cost, and scope management. Able to demonstrate an understanding of how to manage and mitigate design risks and explain the implication of decisions on project requirements.
5. Creating technical specifications and design requirement documentation in the context of product design and development.
4. Demonstrable experience in the use of 3D and 2D CAD package such as SolidWorks, NX, Creo or similar, but also other design tools and practices which may not be digital.
5. Demonstratable knowledge of manufacturing methods such as injection moulding, thermoforming, fabrication, machining, or laser cutting.
6. Familiar with rapid prototyping techniques to demonstrate concepts throughout the design cycle, these range from aesthetic or low-fidelity prototypes to pre-production.

2. Demonstrable industrial experience in the following areas:
