We are recruiting for a Food and Safety Officer (This position can be offered on the full-time or part-time basis).
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Food and Safety Officer to join our Food and Safety Team. We are home to one of the busiest fish markets in the town of Brixham which exports both to Europe and beyond. You will play an essential role in our export health certification process to ensure that our fishing industry in Torbay can export effectively on a daily basis.
You will be based at our office at Brixham Harbour on a minimum number of days a week to make sure that our export certification service runs effectively and to a high standard. If you would prefer to work part time then the majority of your time will be spent at Brixham Harbour office.
Your role will be to take a lead on the export certification service that we provide and day to day you will be responsible for certifying fish and shellfish that is exported out of Brixham to the EU and beyond.Whilst you will be expected to work on your own with little supervision, the export service is overseen by a Senior Environmental Health Officer.
As well as your role in the export health certification service you will be responsible for carrying out other food and safety duties and you will have your own workload in terms of medium risk food inspections and will be involved in specific project work which is undertaken to improve and maintain standards of food safety and health and safety within Torbay.
You will have the following qualification:
* Degree or Diploma or equivalent in Environmental Health, Higher Certificate in Food Inspection or Food Control and ideally be a qualified Food Competent Certifying Officer (FCCO).
* Experience of providing good customer care will be essential, as you will be expected to provide advice and information to service users, other local authorities and government departments such as the Food Standards Agency. We are looking for an individual that can hit the ground running, so a background in food law enforcement, and knowledge of export food controls would be advantageous although not essential.

Skills
Essential:
* Attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records to provide accountability and deliverability.
* Good organisational ability, particularly self-organisation, ability to see tasks through to a successful conclusion, whilst working to tight and changing deadlines.
* To be able to use an effective range of modes of communication including verbal, email, telephone, formal and informal reports taking into account issues of confidentiality.
* To be able to use tact and persuasion to impart information that the recipient may not wish to hear. Ability to deal with difficult situations in a calm and sympathetic manner.
* Ability to travel to Brixham and travel around Torbay to carry out duties on a daily basis.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
* Knowledge of computer database systems their use and the importance of maintaining accurate and timely records.
* Up to date detailed technical and working knowledge of food and safety legislation.
* Knowledge of the broad public health Agenda and of national, regional and local priorities. An understanding of how Food Safety and / or Health and Safety can contribute to these.
* Knowledge and ability to inspect medium risk premises under food safety legislation.
* Knowledge of infectious disease legislation.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
* Educated to degree level standard (including HND, professional/enhanced skill qualification) or equivalent demonstrable work-related experience in appropriate areas.
* Higher Certificate in Food Premises Inspection or Food Control.
* NVQ Level 4 in Health and Safety, NEBOSH certificate or Diploma in Health and safety.
* Food Competent Certifying Officer (FCCO) qualification.
