Job description
Highway Design Engineer - Peterborough
Our client, a leading Consultancy working in the Highways sector, is seeking a Highway Design Engineer to join their engineering design team based in the Peterborough Highways office. As a Highway Design Engineer, you will be working alongside a small team of Engineers, Assistant Engineers, and Technicians to support the delivery of a wide range of highway schemes, including major road designs, junction improvements, and local cycling infrastructure projects.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work as part of an integrated design and operational team, where designers are closely involved in the construction delivery process. Reporting to a Senior Engineer, you will play a crucial role in producing design packages, reports, and other project deliverables, ensuring they align with project outcomes and are delivered within agreed time and cost expectations. Additionally, you will be responsible for conducting site visits, surveys, and resource planning for multi-disciplinary teams. Health and safety compliance, environmental considerations, and customer relationship management are also key aspects of this role.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Produce design packages, reports, and other deliverables to achieve project outcomes.
2. Organise and undertake site visits and surveys.
3. Deliver successful projects to agreed time and cost expectations, ensuring compliance with internal quality standards and processes.
4. Ensure work is undertaken in compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation.
5. Resource planning and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams, including sub-consultants.
6. Staff and people management, including training, development, and performance reviews.
7. Work collaboratively with customers to understand and develop project objectives and deliverables.
8. Manage, build, and develop customer relationships.
Skills & Knowledge Requirements:
9. Incorporated Engineer or highly experienced engineer working towards IEng / CEng.
10. Design and construction experience in the highways sector.
11. Commercial awareness in project delivery.
12. Awareness/experience of Local Highway Authority standards, including Local Transport Note 1/20
13. Evidence of developing assistant engineers, graduates, and technicians.
14. Working knowledge of programming tools, such as ASTA.
15. Evidence of managing Health & Safety and Environment in design and construction.
16. Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other design software, including drainage, alignment, and traffic signs (desirable).
17. Computer literate, particularly with packages such as Microsoft Excel and Word.
18. UK/EEC driving licence.
