In this Chemistry Team Leader role, you will manage and organise a team in accordance with the Laboratory Management System. This includes being responsible for staff development, quality control and commercial turnaround performance. With at least 5 years of experience in analytical Laboratory work, you will be confident in providing advice and assistance to senior analytical staff.
You will report to the Chemistry Manager and on occasion, deputize for them. A strong background in leadership and team management is crucial, as you will be responsible for staff management. You will also conduct yearly appraisals and regular one-to-ones of relevant staff members, as well as setting targets and measuring performance. As an effective communicator, you are comfortable being the first contact for Senior Managers, staff, service engineers and customers who contact the Chemistry department.
You are technically competent in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment, and can ensure that compliance with regulatory standards and the laboratory quality system is adhered to. Ideally, you have some water laboratory experience as well, but this is not essential.

What will you be accountable for?
* Making day to day operational decisions relating to the Chemistry Section and deputizing for the Chemistry Manager when needed.
* Organising the training of staff in laboratory methods and compliance data.
* Completing all activities related to staff management, such as appraisals, performance monitoring and target setting.
* Ensuring staff adhere to the laboratory quality system & ensuring completion of investigations into external proficiency testing scheme failures, QC failures & non-conforming work.
* Ordering materials for the Chemical Section to ensure proper stock control and method uptime.
* Contributing significantly to the continuous improvement of the Laboratory and assist with the strategic development of Scientific Services.
* Arranging preventative maintenance and repairs of instrumentation.
* Assisting with recruitment and onboarding efforts related to lab expansion.
* Completing quality audits of internal practices to ensure compliance.
* Organising internal rotas and taking part in an emergency standby rota when required.
What do you bring to the role?
* Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
* At least 5 years’ experience in analytical laboratory work.
* Leadership and staff management experience.
* Water laboratory experience is desirable, but not essential.
* Chartered status or working towards this would be ideal.
