The Distribution System Operator (DSO) in National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) has a pivotal role in enabling local decarbonisation for our customers and communities at the lowest cost. In this role, you will be the external face of the DSO, influencing and facilitating progress on local decarbonisation initiatives within three of our four licence areas.
The successful candidates will be responsible for presenting a consistent message to our stakeholders about our strategic investment planning process and how this will support us to deliver a decarbonised power system. This is of particular relevance to Local Authorities and regional government bodies, who are looking for NGED to provide support and guidance on the Local Area Energy Planning process that is being developed.
There are three roles available to cover our West Midlands, East Midlands, and South West licence areas, and we can offer flexibility on where the role is based (in one of our local depot offices).
We offer a hybrid and flexible working approach, a mix of working in the office min. 2 days per week and the rest home working. Our standard working week is 37 hours, though we can also offer some flexibility in terms of hours/times if required.
*Please note you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
About Us
We’re National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED), the owner and operator behind the electricity distribution systems for the Midlands, the Southwest of England, and South Wales. Serving communities of more than 8 million people, our expert teams deliver heat, light, and power for homes and businesses.
National Grid employs over 29,000 people worldwide. We are building an inclusive workplace, a place to actively celebrate the cultures, personalities, and preferences of our colleagues – who in turn help to build the success of our business and reflect the diversity of the communities we serve. Our vision is to be at the heart of a clean, fair, and affordable energy future and we are doing this in a fast-moving industry with an increasing focus on tackling climate change, exploring new energy sources that are renewable, low carbon, and improve efficiency to meet demand.
Main Responsibilities
1. Proactively engaging with stakeholder groups involved in Local Area Energy Planning, which includes Local Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships, Combined Authorities, Net Zero Hubs, and Regional/Devolved Governments and being able to explain the role of NGED in local and national decarbonisation.
2. Creating content for external meetings, including wider business messaging and recording all engagement undertaken in a central repository.
3. Mapping regional stakeholder groups on their progress with Local Area Energy Planning and local decarbonisation activities, identifying areas where NGED needs to provide additional support.
4. Representing NGED in “whole system” energy conversations and promoting best practices between regional stakeholder groups.
5. Engaging with internal teams to develop mutual understanding of the work happening between DSO and DNO and ensure relevant knowledge gained through external stakeholder engagement is shared.
6. Developing relationships with colleagues across NGED and Transmission, ensuring you have the information needed to explain the electricity network to stakeholders.
7. Supporting the Regional Decarbonisation Manager with flagship decarbonisation initiatives in our regions that build the DSO’s reputation as an enabler of local decarbonisation.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have experience of stakeholder management, with a particular strength in engaging with stakeholders with varying levels of technical understanding. You don’t need a background in energy as the ideal candidate can learn that but what we do need is someone who:
1. Is skilled in stakeholder engagement with a proven track record influencing and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve shared business priorities that cut across multiple organisations.
2. Has strong organisational skills and can communicate proficiently with key stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally.
3. Can build strong and effective relationships with stakeholders.
4. Is comfortable working independently and proactively, organising meetings with local authorities and seeking out the relevant contacts.
5. Is confident in presenting to different stakeholder groups, both online and face to face.
6. Has some understanding of the energy transition and the important role energy networks play in achieving net zero.
7. Is proficient in developing PowerPoint presentations.
The successful candidate must have a full Driving Licence and be prepared to travel throughout the NGED area.
Applicants may not necessarily possess all the skills required to carry out the role at present but should have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with in-role training.
This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check. Depending on the role, different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
