Mechanical Engineer
We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join the Plant Team at our tunnel drive site. It’s essential to have Mechanical Engineering support to a heavily mechanical operation. The vast array of specific tunnelling plant is critical to the operation and as such needs to be readily available the ensure high levels of production. Maintaining, 95% plus machine availability will be essential for the 2no TBMs in operation. This can only be achieved by having Mechanical Engineering supporting the operation, maintenance, improvement and modification of the plant.
Key Responsibilities
• Responsible for ongoing operation and maintenance of the current installations including the TBM machines.
• Manage the spare parts alongside the store personnel ensuring parts are ready when needed and stocks are sufficient.
• Be a general central focal point for Plant related issues i.e., breakdowns, noise management, shutdown management, required documentation (e.g., regular updates of RAMS, ITP’s, TBS etc)
• Manage interfaces with production / tunnelling team
• Support directly employed Fitters and Electricians ensuring their needs are met in terms of plant, equipment, and materials.
• Enforce the maintenance schedule and monitor compliance.
• Check the work of maintenance technicians to ensure carried out in line with manufacturer’s instructions and best practice.
• Ensure the maintenance teams have up-to-date and relevant information such as drawings, O&M manuals, dismantling methodologies, specialist tools and equipment to undertake maintenance works.
• Support your Senior Engineers with other tasks and activities as required.
• Produce maintenance check sheets, schedules, plan machine downtime activities and manage spare parts.
• Working alongside the Mechanical, Electrical and Construction Foreman to ensure maintenance is carried out on time, downtime is scheduled, sufficient personnel both in number and competence are available to conduct works.
• Propose and see through to completion modifications and improvements to plant where necessary to improve safety and increase machine availability.
• Monitor and inspect plant to ensure fit-for-purpose. Make certain any third-party checks and certificates are in place such as statutory inspections.
Required qualifications
• A Mechanical background with plant maintenance, welding and fabrication works and experience within the tunnelling, underground, heavy pant sector is essential.
• Excellent working knowledge of materials, specifications and industry working practices.
• A minimum bachelor’s degree (grade 2:1 minimum) in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
• Candidates must be able to demonstrate a proven track record of production management, with a strong technical ability for applying their underpinning knowledge and experience to solving problems including new technologies and innovations for complex engineering systems.
• Experience related to areas including bulk material handling, hydraulic systems, pressurized pipework, instrumentation and control, electronics and electrical systems, static and fluid design, and testing and commissioning, will be of value in this role.
• Must have strong interpersonal skills communicating technical matters, able to speak with employees, managers of different disciplines and senior management.
• Readiness to evaluate alternatives and make decisions even when all the information required is not available and gain the appropriate approvals for works.
• A capacity to manage change, identify problems, their causes, and practical solutions.
• Ensure the equipment and machinery availability and overall utilization targets are met.
• Proactively engage with equipment and parts suppliers to ensure that their expertise contributes to the effective operation of production equipment and resolution of problems.
