Job Overview:
As a Site Manager, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the daily operations on-site. You will ensure that groundworks, civil engineering, and construction projects are executed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This position entails managing site staff and subcontractors while ensuring compliance with industry standards, client specifications, and health & safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Management:
- Lead and manage civil engineering and groundworks projects from inception to completion.
- Monitor and coordinate all on-site activities, including excavation, foundations, drainage, and
utilities installation.
- Ensure adherence to project plans, specifications, and timelines.
- Supervise direct labour, subcontractors, and suppliers while reviewing drawings and
understanding project requirements.
- Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE):
- Implement and uphold high standards of health and safety on-site.
- Conduct regular site inspections and ensure compliance with HSE regulations.
- Prepare and update risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols by all staff, contractors, and visitors.
- Budget and Cost Control:
- Monitor project costs to ensure alignment with the agreed budget.
- Identify and address any variances or potential cost overruns.
- Manage procurement and the ordering of materials, equipment, and labour.
- Liaise with quantity surveyors to monitor project progress and cash flow.
- Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all works meet high-quality standards per technical specifications and client requirements.
- Coordinate inspections and testing (e.g., concrete and soil tests) for quality control.
- Manage defects and resolve issues to ensure a defect-free project.
- Team Leadership:
- Lead, motivate, and manage the on-site team, ensuring productivity and high morale.
- Conduct toolbox talks, briefings, and on-site inductions.
- Ensure adequate training and competency of all personnel on-site.
Programme and Scheduling:
- Develop and manage the project programme to ensure timely delivery of each phase.
- Track progress against the schedule and make necessary adjustments.
- Ensure coordination between various trades and subcontractors to prevent delays.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate site records, including daily logs, progress reports, and as-built records.
- Prepare reports for senior management regarding project status, risks, and opportunities.
- Ensure all paperwork, including timesheets, deliveries, and site records, is accurately completed
and filed.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Essential:
- Proven experience as a Site Manager, ideally within civil engineering or groundworks.
- Strong knowledge of groundworks and civil engineering practices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Comprehensive understanding of construction health and safety standards (including CDM 2015
regulations).
- Proficiency in project management software and MS Office applications.
- Desirable:
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) certificate.
- Experience with setting out and engineering principles.

Experience Required:
- Minimum of 5 years as a Site Manager in civil engineering & groundworks.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
- Proven track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.
- Experience in projects involving drainage, utilities, highways, or infrastructure.
Salary & Benefits:
- £50,000 - £60,000 (Depending on experience).
