Senior Inquiry Lawyers
Location: London, Leeds, Manchester or Bristol
Salary: £74,000 London / £71,000 National
About the Role:
The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. Our work includes developing and drafting legislation, providing legal advice on policies, and ensuring value from contracts, covering a wide range of public life aspects.
The lawyers in our Litigation Directorate handle high-profile cases involving constitutional importance. The public law litigation practice focuses on judicial review challenges, while the private law practice represents various large Government departments. All lawyers manage complex caseloads in a supportive team environment and coordinate litigation involving cross-cutting issues.
Your Role:
As a Senior Inquiry Lawyer, you’ll join either the Covid Inquiry Division or the Public Inquiries, Reviews & Litigation team. You will provide expert representation to Government parties at inquiries or offer legal advice and support. You will also have a leadership role, managing up to four less experienced lawyers or leading a small team of paralegals. You are expected to provide professional and inspirational guidance while taking personal responsibility for complex legal work.
Security clearance is required for this role. While the Baseline Personnel Security Standard is sufficient for most roles, Security Check (SC) and Developed Vetting (DV) clearance will be necessary for some inquiries.
As a Senior Inquiry Lawyer, you can work full-time, part-time, or as part of a job share; travel may be required for some roles.
About You:
To succeed in this role, you should possess a sound understanding of public law, substantial experience with public inquiries, and the ability to analyze legal issues in context. You should be a strategic thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of conducting thorough legal research to deliver timely advice.
You will be a confident leader, committed to diversity, inclusion, and equality of opportunity, and respectful of differing views. You should promote and defend your team's decisions and seek shared interests beyond your responsibilities, understanding their impact on the organization.
Benefits:
GLD encourages skill development in a nurturing environment. Benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements.
Vision: Our vision is to be an outstanding legal organization where everyone can thrive and fulfill their potential. This is an exciting time for GLD, with cutting-edge legal work on global issues and a transformation agenda exemplifying the Modern Civil Service.
Closing Date: Noon Monday 25th November 2024.
