An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, compassionate and committed registered nurse to join our Gastroenterology team as a Liver specialist Nurse. We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic individual to help the Gastroenterology service to deliver excellent standards of care across both Sunderland and South Tyneside sites.
The successful candidate will possess clinical skills accreditation and have extensive experience at band 6 in Gastroenterology/Liver services. This person will provide care for a caseload of patients, give expert advice and guidance to peers and work closely with the medical team to deliver on standards of care and core values for the trust.
Main duties of the job

2. Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent)
3. Masters level study or willingness to complete
4. Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience

6. Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete
7. Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients
Extensive post registration experience at a senior level in an acute setting within Gastroenterology/Liver services is essential for the role.
The successful applicant will work within a busy specialist nursing team in Gastroenterology providing specialist care to patients within a very rewarding but challenging area of health care and promotion under supervision of the Gastroenterology Matron, however the role will be largely autonomous because of activity on both Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside Hospital sites.
Job responsibilities
A specialist nurse is defined as a qualified nurse whose primary role is to provide care, guidance and support which is based on an advanced level of knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
The specialist nurse will:
1. Provide clinical assessment, treatment, counselling and education on aspects of liver disease.
2. Work alongside the Alcohol Care Team and Community Alcohol Services to offer alcohol cessation/safe reduction plans.
3. Contribute to/provide specialist education and training programmes for health care professionals and other professional groups.
4. Continue to develop advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
5. Contribute to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
6. Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field through the use of evidence based practice and in line with agreed national standards, and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
7. Work as an autonomous practitioner within their sphere of practice.
8. Continuously improve clinical standards in line with clinical governance framework.
9. Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
10. Contribute to training and education within specialist area.
11. Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.
12. Provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation.
13. Represent the service nationwide.
14. Play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for the specialist area are met.
15. Manage/lead nurse led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.
16. Undertake research relevant to the needs of the specialist practice.
17. Comply with the Trusts vision, values and behavioural compact.
