Treatment Operator
Dumfries & Galloway (Geog)
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Most people don’t think too much about how clean water reaches their taps or what happens to their waste water. But Scottish Water does. In fact, it’s all we think about.
Want to join us? As a Water Operative working around the Dumfries and Lockerbie area, you’ll be on the front lines of making sure Scotland’s water is totally, dependably pure.
What you’ll do
You’ll join an experienced team that really knows its water, helping to monitor and maintain the quality of water at our treatment works and pumping stations. Our TOMS procedures will be your guiding star in operating the plant – you’ll calibrate monitors, filters, tank levels and more. You’ll be responsible for recording water quality, sorting the ‘exceptional’ from the ‘needs attention’ across measures including pH, chlorine, aluminium and phosphate.
Our aim is always to go beyond what the law and regulations expect of us. You’ll handle risk assessments and keep a close eye on health and safety protocols. As part of the team, you’ll take your turn on the standby rota for out-of-hours cover.
What you’ll bring
We’ll get you fully up to speed on the technical bits of the job. You’ll bring strong communication skills and confidence working on your own. You should be comfortable with new computer systems.
Attention to detail is a must: on your watch there should be no risk of inaccurate recordings or health and safety failures. An eye for spotting trends is helpful, and you’ll enjoy solving problems – both independently and with help from site colleagues.
You’ll need a valid driving licence, but we’ll provide the van. Knowledge of water treatment processes and distribution systems would be advantageous. Mechanical maintenance experience is a plus, but none of these are essential.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance. You’ll enjoy 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays) and can buy five more if you need extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
We have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. For everyday life, we embrace flexible working. For your future, there’s our pension plan and life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus and access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
In November 2024, we are moving to a 35-hour week to support the wellbeing and work/life balance of our employees. This role will be a Grade 4 with a starting salary of £27,590, with performance-driven pay progression to a maximum of £32,410.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, including references and license checks. We’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the closing date of the 26th of November at midnight.
A few final things worth knowing… Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One.
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. We’re here to help. Ask us anything at SWRecruitment@ScottishWater.co.uk
