Job Title: Senior Care Support Worker (Learning Disability Home)
Responsible to: Our Clients/Home Manager
Purpose of Position: To work as a senior member of the team in the provision of care and support services to people with learning and/or physical disabilities, and/or behaviours that may challenge; which aims to maximise the potential of individuals. To take charge of the Home in the absence of Home Manager/Deputy Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
SENIOR: Staff
* To work as a committed, co-operative, supportive and flexible colleague within the care support staff team and to carry out such duties as required by the shift, including the delivery of personal care.
* With the support and supervision of the Manager, to perform the senior role and be responsible for:
* Day-to-day maintenance of health and safety of team members.
* As the senior, (and once trained) to control the issue of drugs for which the home has taken responsibility and to maintain the necessary records.
* To ensure effective supervision of employees is maintained at all times and particularly with new or inexperienced people.
* To ensure all staff members work in a way that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the rights of people with learning disabilities.
* To ensure that all duties undertaken by junior and domestic staff are performed to the required standards, and that all staff contribute to the efficient running of the home and creation of the right atmosphere.
* Ensure that team members receive adequate instruction and training for them to carry out their duties competently and safely.
* Ensure that risk assessments are undertaken to eliminate or control risk, and to ensure safe working practices are developed and implemented to minimize risk so far as is reasonably practicable.
* Ensure that all personnel adhere to safe working practices.
* Ensure that accidents/incidents involving team members are reported and investigated.
* Ensure that the manager is advised of any defect or hazards which you cannot rectify yourself.
Care:
* To assist the Manager in the implementation of the philosophies and policies of the Home to minimize the effects of the clients’ learning disabilities.
* Act as a Keyworker to an individual client, taking on responsibility for specified areas of care and support.
* Assist the Manager in ensuring that each client has their needs met through effective assessment and care planning. Review and monitor care plans.
* Liaise with other agencies/professionals as necessary.
* To develop and maintain good relationships with clients to ensure that they are fully involved in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
* To consistently apply non-aversive strategies developed in response to challenging behaviours, and contribute to the review and development of any such strategies.
* To encourage and enable clients to maintain acceptable levels of personal and environmental hygiene, as detailed in their individual care plans.
* To support clients as appropriate with their dietary needs, including healthy eating and weight management.
* To undertake clients’ personal laundry and mending of clothes, giving full support to individuals to maintain any skills/independence.
* To support and enable clients with all aspects of mobility and physical disabilities, including incontinence: help in use and care of aids and personal equipment.
* To support clients with health issues, accompanying clients to appointments, recording as necessary; supporting client as required if their health deteriorates.
* To support and enable clients to achieve their full potential in all areas of communication.
* To take an active part in planning, accompanying and facilitating clients in daily activities, outings and holidays as required.
* To promote non-aggressive and non-abusive behaviour, and manage challenging behaviour providing support at times of distress.
* To contribute to the protection of clients from abuse, following the home’s policy and procedures.
* To maintain individual clients records, completing reports at the end of each shift worked according to the Home’s record keeping and administrative systems.
* To assist in preparing duty rosters.
* To support in staff training, staff supervision (6/8-weekly), disciplinary and development activities.
* To be “on-call” for emergencies arising in the home.
Home:
* To undertake cleaning/domestic tasks according to the Home’s recorded schedule, conducting all procedures within the Home with due regard to the Food Hygiene and Health & Safety Regulations.
* To be familiar with the regulations and procedures required in the execution of the above duties, including employment legislation and disciplinary rules and procedures.
* To complete necessary record keeping, including reading and writing reports, verbal communication, incident/accident recording.
* Promote safe working practice within the Home.
Personal Development:
* To attend and participate in staff and client meetings on a regular basis.
* To attend and participate in identified training activities and formal supervision meetings as required.
* To work towards achieving qualifications relevant to the level of this post as detailed in the Care Homes Regulations.
General:
* To work within the boundaries of Diamond Care’s policies and procedures.
* To liaise with management at all times regarding issues of breach of policies and procedures affecting the clients, staff and the home.
* To work in accordance with the Codes of Conduct and Practice set down by the General Social Care Council.
* To work in a way that demonstrates an awareness of anti-discriminatory practice, being aware of the impact of class, gender, race and prejudice on attitudes.
* To carry out any other duties which are consistent with the post.
