A Day in the Life of therole...
The sun is shining thebirds are chirping and youve got a coffee in hand from one of thecoffeeshops on Magdalen Road. This is how you start your shift. Onthe agenda today youve got a youngperson in on work experience whois here to shadow your day.
Some of theteam are out on the bench chatting away as you walk in. Your firsttask after puttingyour stuff down is to ensure that the water jugsare filled ahead of the afternoon. However theyoung person was onestep ahead of you. Now youre slightly ahead and prep for yourclasses: acouple of strength sessions with a hybrid in there (justto spice things up a bit) a 1:1 and a tour
Its an excitingday ahead.
When a young person is infor work experience it is an opportunity for them to learn howthebusiness works. From grunt work to sessions to social mediaposts. Luckily for them its a full day.First up is the 1:1 theseare for teaching new members the strength sessions Day A or Day B.Forthe first 1:1 this may be their first introduction to the gym soits always best to ask if theyve seenthe space. Before beginningyou conduct any health and safety checks i.e. making suretheappropriate forms have been completed. These are generallychilled sessions more about teaching
the movement patternsand getting used to the rep range rather than delivering the mostintensesession possible. It is towards the end of the work week forthe young person and hopefully theyve learned thewarm up. Becauseit is now time for them to lead it you take part and offer themguidance ifneeded. As the coach in the strength session itsimportant that you interact with everyone;offering praise orproviding alterations in technique (if needed). Theres a hingemovement in this
cycle so its best to stay alert hips backfirst soft knees etc. But everyone has smashed it in thesession sowe finish off with a team session!
Timeto take lunch zone out and chill in the team area.Alright back toit; another strength session followed by a hybrid. In the hybridthere arent any
burpees on the board today so everyonesenergy level has increased by at least 20% since walkingin. Hybridconsists of strength exercises with a lot of volume. So everyonegets warm very quickly. The gruelling session is usually followedwith a stretch to help both the mind and body cool down.Theres sometime before the tour so you ask the young person to give the gym aquick hoover.
The tour is a way to showa potential new member the space if they are thinking of joining. It alsoprovides them an opportunity to ask questions inpersonrather than through email. Many of thecoaches have developed theirown script; it helps with the flow when moving through the gym.Onemore session for the day and then after that its time to lock up.Everyone else has finishedtheir shift and the young person has gonehome. So its just you in the building you blast somemusic as youclose and lock up and get the gym ready for the coach on shift inthemorning.
