Job Duties
Maintenance Operators set up work zones, cut brush, clean ditches and pipes, repair roadways, plow snow, and perform preventive maintenance and on equipment and power tools. They perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather and other emergency events. Must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions.
Core responsibilities include:
Equipment Operations – Operate light, medium and heavy-duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Job Safety – Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Emergency Operations – Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Preventative Maintenance – Perform repair, replacement and preventive maintenance on various equipment. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
Manual Labor – Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed for project completion.
This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
2. Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
3. Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
4. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
5. Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
6. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
7. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
8. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
9. Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
10. Safety shoes required
Additional Considerations
11. Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
12. Experience performing heavy manual labor and equipment operation such as dump trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.
13. Experience performing basic preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
14. Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
15. Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
16. Flagging certification.

References and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, pre-employment physical and drug screen, fingerprint-based criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration during interview process.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
