A fantastic opportunity for an experienced Engineer to join LiNa Energy, a disruptive clean-tech battery technology company, whose ambition is to significantly contribute to achieving global net-zero targets LiNa Energy is based in Lancaster and is developing a novel battery technology to transform energy-storage solutions. As a Senior Engineer, you will directly contribute to the engineering and design of LiNa’s solid-state sodium battery cells, modules and systems, utilising first principal design techniques. The role is full-time and is based at our science facility in the centre of Lancaster. Responsibilities Contribute to the engineering and development of novel battery cells, modules, systems and products, inline with the company roadmap, strategy, and product delivery schedule. Developing CAD drawings and technical documents for tooling and components. Reviewing CAD drawings and technical documents from other members of the engineering team and focusing on accuracy taking a right first time approach. Working individually and collaborating with the engineering team, you will produce components to specifications from cell to pack and systems including, large-scale, multi-kWh/MWh systems, toward commercial products and supporting R&D activities. Utilize first principles and FEA techniques to simulate and model mechanical systems including battery cells and systems focusing on structural integrity, heat transfer properties, pressurization on both static and dynamic components. Working closely with the Director of Engineering you will develop technical roadmaps and plan work packages to meet these goals. Contributing and leading internal team meetings and updates and detailed design reviews. Actively managing relationships within external subcontractors and suppliers to deliver components and materials to precise specifications and to schedule and budget. Conduct analytical tests on products, tooling and processes. Overseeing quality control programmes and technical assurance Support other company-critical activities, such as the build of on- and off-site in of battery packs and systems. While also support research and development activities with development of rapid prototyping production tools, fixtures and jigs Essential Skills and Experience Qualified to degree or higher in mechanical engineering or relevant engineering discipline Minimum five years in mechanical engineering design role or similar ; experience working in battery or related industries is an advantage Highly proficient in 3D CAD design preferably using SolidWorks and file management systems such as PDM. Highly proficient in analysis with CAE/CFD packages such as ANSYS using first principal techniques to inform design and development in both static and dynamic systems Highly proficient in rapid prototyping techniques, such 3D printing FDM, SLS and SLA. Able to apply theoretical mechanical knowledge to develop practical, realisable solutions Able to establish validation tests criteria, analyse results and share learning with the team Self-motivated and able to work independently at the same time as contributing to the wider team Excellent verbal and written communication skills, structured & organised Eligible to work and live in the UK without restrictions Skills and Experience preferred (but not essential) Tool Design with knowledge of tool making techniques such as, CNC Milling, Turning and Wire EDM machining, material hardening, grinding and polishing, surface treatments and finishes. Or designed tools for punching, pressing, forming and trimming of components. Working knowledge of manufacturing methods and fabrication techniques, specifically high-volume production methods such a laser welding, and automation techniques. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions for difficult assignments in a fast moving environment Technical curiosity for understanding all aspects of battery cell and pack design and manufacturing with knowledge of battery cell chemistries and production processes Knowledge of electrochemical battery storage systems, high voltage architecture development, and/or electric powertrain components such as electric traction motors & power electronics About the employer LiNa Energy is commercialising a safe, high-performance, low-cost, solid-state sodium battery technology for stationary storage and transport applications.
