Lead a team of 11 and over 50 garden volunteers across three exceptional gardens in Cornwall, managing day-to-day maintenance and long-term planning, and setting and delivering operating and conservation budgets.
We have three unique gardens to manage: Trelissick, with a two-acre walled garden to be restored; Glendurgan, with a historic laurel maze and exotic plants; and Trerice, with a formal knot garden and a productive potager garden.
Our ideal candidate has significant practical horticultural experience, a deep understanding of plant care, and knowledge of historic landscape conservation.
As Head Gardener, you will champion our cause, engage visitors with the beauty and nature of our gardens, and support an inclusive culture where everyone feels a positive sense of belonging.
1. Experience of managing a diverse garden throughout the seasons
2. Knowledge and understanding of the conservation of historic landscapes
3. Experience of personal contribution to the development and delivery of interventions and/or programming within gardens
4. Good communication skills, enabling positive relationships to be built and maintained externally and internally
5. Great leadership skills with experience of managing and supporting teams of staff and volunteers
6. Experience with managing operational risk and compliance requirements relevant to horticulture
7. Commitment to working as part of a wider team to build a culture of inclusion
8. Experience with managing resources, budgets and work plans to ensure quality delivery
