Laboratory Technician
The Scotch Whisky Specialist Laboratory is where the magic happens, creating new Scotch innovations for our worldwide consumers and managing the long-term quality of our existing portfolio of brands. The Scotch Whisky Team is a highly collaborative team working closely together with partners in Marketing, Innovation, and Supply in the UK and across the globe. This role will help ensure the smooth running of the Whisky Specialist Laboratory and prompt delivery of services to our collaborators, ensuring our project pipelines progress at pace, ultimately delivering our Scotch Whisky ambition.
Key Accountabilities
1. Laboratory Operations – management of glassware
2. Ensure correct PPE is always available in a clean and usable condition
3. Ensure all standard commodities components are fully stocked e.g. sample bottles
4. Calibrate relevant equipment daily
5. Maintain lab equipment and ensure all SOPs are current and employed by equipment users (Standard Operating Procedures)
6. Champion safe working behavior and tidiness through Good Laboratory Practice
7. Support sample ordering & management process
8. Support preparation of sensory panels
9. Preparation of samples for shipment to customers
10. General lab administration & data capture
11. Compliance with all HMRC & DIAGEO protocols
Skills
1. Good communication skills.
2. Excellent organisational skills.
3. Good basic computing skills - email, word processing, PowerPoint, Excel - and ability to quickly learn to use lab-specific software such as sample management system & Compusense for sensory sample data capture.
Experience / Skills:
1. Experience in lab or similar environment; Brewing, Spirits, Wine, and/or Beverage Development experience preferred.
2. Organisation, ability to follow procedures, multitasking, attention to detail, and self-motivation.
3. Candidates should have a solid grounding and practical experience in working in a laboratory environment.
4. Strong practical capability & skills
5. Attention to detail & structured approach with solid record keeping
6. Good communication skills
7. Computer skills including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook calendar management. Able to learn new software e.g. Sample Management System & Compusense for Sensory data capture
8. Positive attitude and ability to work with a diverse team at pace.
9. Flexible approach to each day
10. Self-motivated to carry out routine tasks
11. Desire to learn, build skills and make a contribution to the delivery of the team
12. Interest in Scotch Whisky is an advantage.
Education
A Levels / Higher Qualification or HNC in Science / Food Science / Chemistry or related discipline required, or proven experience equivalent.
As a temporary contractor, you'll be employed by our Managed Service Provider, Magnit Global, who manage most of our temporary contract hiring; you will not be employed by Diageo.
