I have been assigned by an NHS Trust in the UK to help them recruit a Consultant in Dermatology on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months.
Being an area you specialize in, I wondered if this may be of interest to you or if you knew someone who you could recommend to me. Our client is interested in Consultant Dermatologists with general skills and experience who may also like to develop a sub-speciality interest that complements those of the current team. Patch Test Lead and skin cancer would be examples.
Other areas of further development for the department are:
1. 2WW and urgent suspected skin cancer clinics. Over 70% of our workload is due to skin cancer referrals. This is due to the high rate of skin cancer we experience in Herefordshire and Powys.
2. Teledermatology
3. Community dermatology clinics – increased integration with local GPs aiming to reduce referrals and increase community dermatology knowledge and skills. Many GPs in the area are very proactive regarding dermatology and have postgraduate qualifications from Cardiff.
4. Ongoing training and support for our inflammatory and skin cancer nurse specialists
5. Training and Education – We wish to develop our teaching programmes to GPs, GPVTS, CMT doctors, and medical students.
The appointee will be appointed as a Consultant Dermatologist working in general outpatient and/or other appropriate clinical venues. Duties will extend across a range of dermatology specialties and the post holder will be expected to have proficiencies in general dermatology and have dedicated Tele dermatology time.
The Department secretariat and offices are all located above the skin outpatient and surgical rooms based slightly away from the main hospital, at Gaol Street. A Dermatology library is maintained in the offices. The consultant will have an office with access to computers with internet access and secretarial support for the post holder. The Dermatology department has recently expanded staffing and premises. The new bespoke outpatient department is based at Goal Street which has 7 clinic rooms and three operating theatres. Clinic templates are booked according to the British Association of Dermatologists staffing and facilities guidance for dermatology services. Phototherapy, iontophoresis, patch testing and photodynamic therapy clinics are also based at Gaol Street, the main site for Dermatology.
The department of dermatology sits within the ambulatory medicine directorate in the division of medicine and at this time, there are currently no acute on-call commitments. The department currently receives circa 4000 referrals each year and sees circa 8000 follow-ups. Day case skin surgery amounts to 2300 cases per annum. Advice and guidance is given for around 400 tele dermatology cases each month. A standard clinic template would be 6 New and 4 Follow Up patients, when also supervising other clinical members such as Associate Specialists or Clinical Nurse Specialists. For a surgical list 4 – 5 patients, appropriate to procedure and complexity.
In addition, Dermatology Skin Cancer MDT meetings are held weekly with Plastic surgery, Head and Neck Surgeons, ENT, Oculoplastics and Histopathology. They occur in a specialised MDT facility with Histopathology and Radiology with images projected onto clearly visualized screens. The digital PACS image system allows computerised viewing of all X-rays, CT and MRI scans. This has had significant advantages for clarity of presentation in addition to being a very useful teaching resource. The Oncologists are based in Birmingham via the Specialist Skin cancer MDT and there are monthly Dermatopathology meetings.
The successful appointee will be moving to one of the best locations in the UK, in a picturesque countryside offering a relaxing lifestyle near a rugged coastline with beautiful beaches and misty mountains. The appeal of moving to an area like this is low living costs, quality schools with a high quality of life and reasonable property prices.
