Role: Manufacturing or Product Development Designer
Salary: £25,000 to £30,000 per annum, plus benefits and career growth opportunities
Hours: 8am – 4.30pm Monday to Friday
Location: Alfreton Area, easily commutable from Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby, Belper, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Worksop, Sheffield, Newark-on-Trent, Loughborough or Burton upon Trent.

This highly successful manufacturing company design a wide range of solutions using Injection Moulding, Vacuum Forming, Metal & Plastic Extrusion and fabrication processes. Through continued growth the business is now seeking to recruit an additional Designer for their small & highly regarded Design & Development team.
The role has a wide range of duties that will be introduced & expanded on over time, which means the hiring manager can consider Designers who have experience of design for manufacture, Product Development or New Product Design.
The Role & Responsibilities
Working under the guidance of the experienced Design Manager, the Product Development Designer will need to demonstrate an enthusiastic & proactive approach to work and the ability to follow processes & procedures that they will be trained on.
The first 6 – 9 months of the Product Development Designers career within the company will grow their knowledge & detailed understanding of the company’s wide product range. The work will focus on supporting the business by undertaking product branding & printing projects (typically utilising Excel & Publisher software) as well as calculating & communicating cost estimations for clients who require bespoke changes to the standard products for specific projects (typically utilising Excel & AutoCAD).
After this initial 6 – 9 month period where you’ve grown your knowledge of the company’s products, materials, manufacturing processes and understand the typical changes Clients require, the Product Development Designer’s responsibilities will expand through assigned work & projects - growing across the design department to eventually include the full remit of skills including design changes, product development & improvements, design for manufacturing, new product design and the associated processes and procedures needed for success.
Skills/Requirements
With training provided on the company’s products and procedures, this role could suit an experienced Designer with good manufacturing process knowledge, product development or new product design skills. Alternatively, a motivate Graduate Designer with some hands-on experience gained from one or more placements will also be of keen interest.
Good communication skills are needed as the Designer will work with others across the company, with external Suppliers and Clients too.
Able to create accurate drawings & utilise calculations for product design, deveopment or for manufacturing
Ideally will have experience with SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD, although experience with other CAD packages are equally of interest as cross training can be provided
Have the ability to design and manage their own projects, initially under the guidance of others – from product branding, print design, new products, testing new designs and designing improvements to existing products or production/manufacturing processes or equipment in the factory
Experience of programming CAM software is useful, although training will be given
Experience of Injection moulding, Vacuum forming, Metal and plastic extrusions or Aluminium fabrication is useful but not essential
Good knowledge of general engineering principles
Good computer skills ideally including Word, Excel, Publisher or similar software packages
