Job summary
The appointee will be a key member of the General Medicine Consultant team, ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality care to patients within the trust and to contribute to the further development of the service.
Main duties of the job
The appointed consultant would be expected to contribute to the on-going service improvement programme developing:
1. Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT)
2. Cost Improvement programme (CIP)
3. Implementing evidence based new ways of working when necessary

Job responsibilities
Clinical
4. To provide rapid assessment of general medical patients.
5. To stabilise and manage patients admitted with medical emergencies
6. To carry out post-take ward rounds during the week.
7. To maintain effective communication and handover to the on-call team.
8. To develop emergency services, liaising with other departments including Acute, Accident & Emergency, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation and Community Care, and developing speciality teams and fast-track services.
9. To take part in the weekend General Medical on-call rota with colleagues, currently 1 in 18, as first on-call 8:30 till 20:30 and a second on call covers the wards from 9:00 till 14:30 at weekends.
Organisational
10. Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals
11. To act as clinical/educational supervisor to locally employed doctors and doctors in training programmes of a variety of grades and experience as appropriate.
12. To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
13. To provide leadership and support for the effective development of the service.
14. To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
15. To further develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and concise care bundles.
16. To carry out responsibilities with due regard to the Trusts Equal Opportunities Policy.
17. To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff and attend all relevant health and safety training.
18. To ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard.
19. To carry out annual performance reviews with each member of their staff.
20. To agree annual personal development plans with their staff and support them with any training or development requirements to fulfil their role.
21. To attend all relevant management training in health and safety, risk assessment etc.
22. To participate in personal objective setting and review, including the creation of a personal development plan and the Trusts appraisal process

Qualifications
Essential
23. MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
24. MRCP
25. Other professional qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
Experience
Essential
26. Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
27. Meets the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework.
Desirable
28. Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview
